Aisin-gioro Pu Yi was drie jaar toen hij in 1908 als tiende Mantsjoe-keizer op de Drakentroon werd geplaatst. Slechts drie jaar duurde zijn 'regeer'periode. Bij het uitbreken van de revolutie in 1911 werd hij afgezet. Wel bleef hij met zijn even uitgebreide als decadente hof in de Verboden Stad wonen. In 1924 werd de keizerlijke familie gedwongen naar Tientsin te verhuizen, waar de Japanse geheime dienst Pu Yi gebruikte als pion in de expansieplannen. In 1934 maakten ze hem keizer van Mantsjoerije. Macht had Pu Yi daar niet, mar hij, zijn aan de popium verslaafde vrouw Wan Yung (Schoon Gelaat) en zijn nieuwe, zeer jonge concubine wijdden zich vol overgave aan het leven binnen de paleismuren. Na de capitulatie van Japan in 1945 namen Sovjet-troepen Pu Yi gevangen. Hij werd naar Tokio gebracht, waar hij in het proces tegen de Japanse oorlogsmisdadigers zijn voormalige vrienden verraadde. Vervolgens leverde de Sovjetunie hem uit aan de autoriteiten van de Volksrepubliek China. In zijn geboorteland onderging Pu Yi een periode van 'heropvoeding', bekeerde zich tot het communisme en maakte carrière in de partij. In 1967 stierf de laatste keizer van China in Tientsin.
